Physiotherapist and care assistant

I worked five years as a care assistant in a residential care home while studying. Helping someone stand, wash, or feel less afraid: these are things I knew how to do before I was a physiotherapist.

In a care home you quickly become a person in your own right in someone’s life. Many are lonelier than others, and the visit counts as much as the session: getting out a little, talking, laughing with someone for half an hour. That is why I have a particular fondness for this work. I find it more human than the rest.

Why neurology

I wrote my final-year dissertation on multiple sclerosis. That condition intrigued me precisely because I found it so hard to understand. These days I am as fond of neurology as of respiratory or orthopaedic physiotherapy.
